City of Moreland: Sparta Monument

On 29 November I was pleased to attend the unveiling by Moreland City Council in Sparta Place, located on the western side of Sydney Road, of a bronze statue of the famous Spartan warrior King Leonidas. I congratulate Moreland council, which has recognised the long-established Greek-Australian community living in Moreland which originates from Laconia, the prefecture of Sparta, which has had a longstanding sister city relationship with Moreland.

I also congratulate the Pallaconian Brotherhood of Melbourne and Victoria Leonidas, which, together with the nomarkhi of Laconia and the mayor of Sparta, helped to make this monument a reality.

King Leonidas is remembered for his heroic stand against the Persians at the Battle of Thermopylae with his 300-man royal guard. They withstood the Persian army of many thousands for two days, battling valiantly to the last man. King Leonidas is the epitome of freedom and courage, and I am very proud to have Spartan heritage myself.
