The details of this painting are shrouded in mystery, poised to be revealed on February 17 next year.

While we await this momentous occasion, let's delve into Tony's artistic journey leading up to the much-anticipated portrait of Leonidas, destined to grace our Family Centre.

Our artistic exploration commences with Tony's captivating piece, "Fierce Medusa," a mesmerising fusion of artistry and mythology that leaves an indelible impression.

But that's just the beginning! In the weeks to come we intend to feature various sets of Tony's work from a portfolio exceeding 850 paintings spanning diverse themes, from evocative portraits to breathtaking landscapes and exquisite still-life compositions.

«Αρχαία Ελληνική Τεχνολογία και Επιστήμες» – Διάλεξη του Παν. Μαυραειδή στην Αδελαϊδα

Μια διάλεξη που αποκαλύπτει την κληρονομιά της αρχαίας ελληνικής τεχνολογίας στη σύγχρονη εποχή

Διάλεξη με θέμα «Αρχαία Ελληνική Τεχνολογία και Επιστήμες», θα δώσει ο Παναγιώτης Μαυραειδής, την Κυριακή, 15 Οκτωβρίου και ώρα 3 μ.μ., στο Ολύμπικ Χωλ, στην Αδελαΐδα.

Η διάλεξη πραγματοποιείται στα πλαίσια του ελληνικού φεστιβάλ «Οδύσσεια 2023» που διοργανώνει η Eλληνική Ορθόδοξη Kοινότητα Νότιας Αυστραλίας, σε συνεργασία με το Ελληνικό Μουσείο της Αδελαΐδας.

Η ομιλία αναφέρεται στα τεχνολογικά επιτεύγματα των αρχαίων Ελλήνων. H ανακάλυψη της δύναμης του ατμού, η χρήση ρολογιών ακριβείας, η μέτρηση της περιφέρειας της Γης, η χρήση αναλογικών υπολογιστών, η κωδικοποίηση μηνυμάτων, η κατασκευή μηχανικών και πνευματικών αυτοματισμών, αλλά και άλλων εφαρμογών ήταν γνωστά εδώ και δύο χιλιάδες χρόνια πριν στους αρχαίους.

Η ομιλία έχει διάρκεια περίπου μία ώρα και τριάντα λεπτά και συνοδεύεται από προβολή εικόνων, σχεδιαγραμμάτων αλλά και βίντεο λειτουργίας των αρχαίων αυτών συσκευών.

Ο Παναγιώτης Μαυραειδής γεννήθηκε στην Αδελαΐδα. Σπούδασε Tεχνολόγος Ηλεκτρονικός Mηχανικός στην Ελλάδα. Είναι ο γραμματέας και ένα από τα ιδρυτικά μέλη του Ελληνικού Μουσείου της Αδελαΐδας. Εργάζεται στην Αδελαΐδα στον χώρο των ραδιοτηλεπικοινωνιών και είναι δημιουργός και παραγωγός του ελληνόφωνου ραδιοφωνικού σταθμού «Μελωδία» στην Αδελαΐδα. Έχει εκδώσει το 2021 το μυθιστόρημα επιστημονικής φαντασίας εμπνευσμένο από την Ελληνική Μυθολογία με τίτλο: «Αγγελιοφόρος από μακριά» αλλά και εργασία έρευνας με τίτλο: «Τεχνητή νοημοσύνη, από την φαντασία στην πραγματικότητα. «Η ζωή στην όμορφη Αδελαΐδα και το Ελληνικό Μουσείο»

Σήμερα, Σάββατο, 7 Οκτωβρίου, από τις 6:30 μ.μ. έως τις 7:30 μ.μ. τοπική ώρα στην Αδελαΐδα (11:00 μ.μ. - 12:00 π.μ. ώρα Ελλάδας), η εκπομπή «Τα Πρόσωπα της Εβδομάδας,» που παρουσιάζει η Μίνα Ράλλη στη Φωνή της Ελλάδας, το παγκόσμιο ραδιόφωνο της ΕΡΤ, θα ταξιδέψει στην πανέμορφη πόλη μας, την Αδελαΐδα, μαζί με την εκπαιδευτικό και ιδρύτρια του Ελληνικού Μουσείου Αδελαΐδας, Χρυσούλα Μελισσινάκη. 

Η Χρυσούλα, μαζί με την ευρύτερη οικογένειά της, θεωρούνται «νεοφερμένοι» στην Αυστραλία, αφού πριν περίπου 10 χρόνια προχώρησαν σε τολμηρό βήμα να αφήσουν την Ελλάδα και να εγκατασταθούν μόνιμα στην Αδελαΐδα. Είναι επίσης μέλη του Παλλακωνικού Συλλόγου. Ο σύζυγος της, Παναγιώτης Μαυραειδής, είναι ιδρυτής και διευθυντής του ελληνικού ραδιοφωνικού σταθμού «Ράδιο Μελωδία – Αυστραλία» που εκπέμπει σήμα στην περιοχή της Αδελαΐδας από το Παλλακωνικό Οικογενειακό Κέντρο.

Στη συνέντευξή της, η Χρυσούλα περιγράφει τη ζωή στην όμορφη πόλη μας και μας εισάγει στον κόσμο του Ελληνικού Μουσείου Αδελαΐδας. Επίσης, αναφέρεται στο πρόβλημα της στέγασης που παραμένει ανοικτό, τέσσερα χρόνια μετά την ίδρυσή του, και εξετάζει τις δυσκολίες που αντιμετωπίζουν οι νεοφερμένοι Έλληνες που αποφασίζουν να μεταναστεύσουν στην Αυστραλία.

From Byzantine Weaving to Maritime History: The heritage of Geraki and Neapolis Voion on Display

Echoes of our past that continue to resonate today!

We are thrilled that Geraki is once again a part of this year's European Cultural Heritage Days, offering an opportunity to showcase the village's rich cultural heritage to the local community, especially the younger generation.

The European Cultural Heritage Days are celebrated across Europe during the final weekend of September. Their primary goal is to raise awareness about preserving and promoting national and shared European cultural heritage. This year's theme, "Cultural Heritage and Tradition: Echoes from Yesterday in Today," will be celebrated through various events at archaeological sites and museums, all of which will offer free admission during the festivities.

The Ephorate of Antiquities of Laconia is actively participating in this year's European Cultural Heritage Days and has organized events for both students and the general public. These events will take place at the Archaeological Museum of Neapolis Voion and the archaeological site of Geraki Castle.

Here are the details of the events:

September 20th at the Archaeological Museum of Neapolis Voion (10:00 - 13:00):

An exhibition titled "Ships and Seafaring on the Coasts of Malea and Epidaurus Limera from Prehistoric Times to the 20th Century" will be hosted. Additionally, guided tours of the museum's permanent exhibition will be available for primary school students (4th, 5th, and 6th grade). These tours will focus on topics such as maritime trade, population movements through maritime routes, and fishing.

September 23rd at the Archaeological Site of Geraki Castle (starting at 17:00):

An event called "Play the Loom, Thunder..." will be held. In collaboration with the Directorate of Modern Cultural Heritage and with the support of the Cultural Association of Geraki and the Philanthropic Society of Ladies and Misses of Geraki, an awareness and familiarization event will be organized for the local community and educators of Laconia. This event will highlight Geraki's art of weaving, a significant part of the town's culture since Byzantine times and officially recognized as part of Greece's Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2019. Visitors will gain insight into the art of weaving on upright looms and other elements that constitute Geraki's rich intangible cultural heritage through informational tours, presentations on the educational work of the Directorate and UNESCO related to integrating intangible cultural heritage into education, as well as musical and dance performances.

The European Cultural Heritage Days offer a splendid opportunity for Laconia to celebrate its cultural heritage and traditions. The Ephorate of Antiquities of Laconia's participation in these events, with a focus on maritime history and the art of weaving, promises to be both informative and engaging. It's a wonderful chance to explore the echoes of the past in the vibrant present of Laconia.

The Dark Days of 1825: Ibrahim Pasha's Rampage in Laconia and Vrontamas' Stand

Holocaust of the Palaiomonástiro on 15 September 1825: 

Remembering the Fight for Greek Freedom and National Independence

In the year 1825, the region once known as Morea, and today recognised as the Peloponnese, bore witness to a profoundly distressing chapter in its history. The catalyst for this ordeal unfolded on August 30th when Egyptian army general Ibrahim Pasha launched a campaign marked by devastation, terror, and chaos throughout Morea, the ancient Peloponnese. This grim expedition left villages in ruins, frightened communities seeking refuge in the mountains, and Greek fighters under the leadership of Theodoros Kolokotronis engaged in a determined struggle.

However, the most sombre day of all arrived on September 15, 1825, forever etched into memory as the Holocaust of the Palaiomonástiro in Vrontamas. It was on this day that 400 courageous Vrontamites boldly declared "OXI" (no) in defiance of Ibrahim's assault, just seven kilometres from Geraki. What followed was a relentless and brutal response from the Ottomans, an event that would come to symbolise Greece's enduring struggle for independence and freedom.

Ibrahim Pasha's Campaign Begins (August 30, 1825) 

The grim campaign commenced as General Ibrahim Pasha and his forces departed from their fortified camp in Tripolitsa. Their mission was to sow chaos throughout Morea, with a particular focus on the rugged Parnon Mountains. Their initial target was Trinisa, situated at the estuary of the Evrotas River where it flows into the Laconian Gulf. Local resistance crumbled, and the nearby villages in the Elos plain fell victim to looting and arson. Frightened residents sought refuge in the Parnon Mountains, notably in the densely wooded Zarakas region.

Gathering of Greek Resistance (September 5, 1825)

As Ibrahim's troops established a camp roughly 30 kilometres from Trinisa, near Molaoi, Theodoros Kolokotronis, a prominent Greek leader, descended from the mountains near Kosmas of Kynouria. Their mission was to defend the southern flank, forming a defensive line extending from Kourkoúla to Gkagkaniá, Toúrla, and Koulochéra. Meanwhile, Greek fighters, under the command of notable revolutionaries like Giannakis Notaras, gathered around Agios Petros.
Ibrahim's Onslaught Continues (September 11, 1825)

Ibrahim Pasha's relentless march led him to Niata and Apidia as he moved toward the Kounoupochoria, a cluster of villages in southern Parnon. On September 11, skirmishes erupted near Mariorema, where Greek fighters, led by Staikos Staikopoulos, confronted the enemy. The Zacharopoulos brothers guarded the Kosmas pass, which was essential for controlling access to the Kynouria region.

On the same day, clashes occurred in the wooded slopes of Elatias above Karitsa, resulting in minor casualties on both sides. Local legends recounted a fierce battle between Ibrahim's troops and Kolokotronis' fighters, with the Ottomans reportedly burying their fallen in the area, now known as "Mnimata" or Graves. Panic-stricken villagers of Karitsa sought refuge in the dense forest of Tsouka, from where they witnessed the devastation of their homes.

Torching of Geraki (September 12, 1825)

On September 12, 1825, Ibrahim's forces descended upon Geraki, setting the town ablaze and causing hundreds of casualties. Surrounding olive groves and scrubland also went up in flames. Many locals fled to the mountains, while women and children sought refuge in Sormpanos, hoping to escape to the islands of Spetses and Hydra. Regrettably, not all would reach safety.

In eastern Laconia, distressed folk sought shelter in the old castle of Kyparissi, situated in an isolated and mountainous area known as "Koulia." The monks of the small monastery of Agios Theodoros in Chararakas abandoned their abode upon hearing of Ibrahim's approach.

Holocaust of the Palaiomonástiro in Vrontamas (September 15, 1825)

September 15, 1825, stands as a day of infamy, just seven kilometres from Geraki. On this day, 400 villagers of Vrontamas, resolute and defiant, thundered "OXI" in response to Ibrahim's assault. The Ottoman retaliation was swift and merciless, involving fire and sulphur. This tragic confrontation would forever symbolize the indomitable spirit of Greece's struggle for independence.

The women and children of Vrontamas had sought refuge in Palaiomonástiro, a cave church adorned with rare frescoes dating back to 1201 AD. Led by the village priest Papa-Dimitris Papadimitriou and local chieftain Giannakis Karampas, their spirit and determination remained unbroken.

Ibrahim's troops scoured the area for information but were met with silence. Eventually, they discovered the hidden refuge of 300 to 400 Vrontamites, a monastery perched atop an inaccessible cliff face. The siege began, with relentless attacks. From within the monastery, the defiant villagers sang and chanted, further infuriating Ibrahim. Recognising a weakness in the monastery's roof, the Ottomans ordered it blasted. "Fire and sulphur!" cried the Ottomans, and thus, the holocaust of Palaiomonástiro became an indelible testament to the struggle for Greek independence.

Conclusion

It is incumbent upon us today to ensure that the memory of these dark days never fades. We owe it to our forebears and their unrelenting fight for a free and independent homeland.

Let the memory of the martyrs and fighters of Palaiomonástiro in Vrontamas endure for eternity, a testament to the unwavering spirit of those who fought for the independence and freedom of Greece.

A Pan-Laconian Society Founding Member Stavroula Pandos Turns 99!

"Her 'human wealth' — three children, eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren."

In a world filled with chaos and uncertainty, there are moments of pure joy and inspiration that remind us of the beauty of life. Today, as we celebrate the 99th birthday of our beloved Stavroula Pandos, we are reminded that age is but a number, and the human spirit can remain as vibrant and creative as ever.

Stavroula Pandos, née Laganas, is a living legend within the Pan-Laconian Society, a popular poet, and one of our cherished founding members. Born sometime in 1924, no one knows exactly when, the actual birthdate is shrouded in uncertainty; such were the recordkeeping practices of that era. In a delightful twist of tradition however, she chooses to celebrate her birthday on September 14, aligning it with her nameday. Hailing from the picturesque village of Kastania (present-day Kastoreio), nestled at the base of the legendary Taygetos Mountains, Stavroula truly embodies the spirit and essence of Laconia.

Stavroula's "human wealth"

As the youngest of seven children born to Giorgis and Giannoula Laganas, Stavroula faced the challenges of her time with determination and resilience. In an era when educational opportunities for village children were scarce, more so for young girls, she defied the odds and completed her primary education during the tumultuous years of the Great Depression.

Stavroula had a strong desire for knowledge, but she couldn't pursue higher education due to the challenging circumstances her family and many others in the countryside were facing. However, her life took a positive turn when, at the age of 26, she married Evangelos Pandos, who was both her true love and a fellow villager. Their wedding, celebrated on March 25, 1951, during Kastania's national day festivities, was a joyful occasion highlighted by the Dance of Isaiah.

Thirty months later, Stavroula, Evangelos, and their 19-month-old daughter embarked on a life-changing journey to Australia. They sailed aboard the migrant ship Skaubryn, bidding farewell to their beloved Kastania on October 26, 1953, the Feast Day of Agios Dimitrios. In Adelaide, they lovingly raised three children: Charikleia, Ioanna, and Alekos.

The Pandos family holds a special place in the heart of the Pan-Laconian Society of SA "Leonidas." Evangelos dedicated years of service to the society, including a term as its president, considering it a representative body for all South Australians of Lakonian descent.

Though Evangelos sadly passed away in 2008, Stavroula, at the age of 99, continues to exemplify the family's unwavering commitment to the club. Despite her health challenges, when well enough she eagerly participates in Pan-Laconian functions, captivating audiences with her epic poems filled with wisdom, wit, and inspiration. Yet, what brings her the greatest joy is what she calls her "human wealth" — three children, eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Chronia Polla, Stavroula! Happy 99th Birthday, and may your days be filled with happiness and inspiration. May you long continue to grace our gatherings with your wisdom and poetic words, reminding us that age is no obstacle to a life well-lived.

The first photo in the album, generously shared by John Chronopoulos, captures a moment from the 1970s when the Premier of South Australia, Don Dunstan, shared a drink with members of the Greek community. John has also shared several other undated photographs, each brimming with historical significance, though lacking captions. These snapshots provide glimpses into a world where dreams were pursued, friendships flourished, and traditions thrived. While these photos may not exclusively feature Laconians, they represent a collective heritage that binds us together. They are mosaic fragments portraying the broader journey of the Greek community, filled with triumphs and tribulations.

Through these images, we can revisit the moments that have shaped our identity. Our mission is to preserve and share this invaluable treasure trove with you. We proudly present "Adelaide's Greek Heritage: A Pictorial Odyssey Through Time". It's a labour of love, a tribute to our roots, and an invitation to explore the stories within each frame. However, our journey is ongoing, and we invite you, our readers, to join us. We seek your expertise, memories, and insights to identify faces and describe events. Νέες Επιτυχίες για τον Παλλακωνικό Σύλλογο: Ετήσια Γενική Συνέλευση και Εκλογές Επιτροπής

Στις 25 του Σεπτέμβρη 2022 πραγματοποιήθηκε με επιτυχία η Ετήσια Γενική Συνέλευση του Παλλακωνικού Συλλόγου μας, στο Παλλακωνικό Οικογενειακό Κέντρο στο Plympton Park. Η συμμετοχή των μελών ήταν ενθαρρυντική, καθώς αναμέναμε να ενημερωθούμε για την τρέχουσα κατάσταση του συλλόγου σε αυτούς τους δύσκολους καιρούς.

Κατά τη διάρκεια της συνέλευσης, η πρόεδρος του συλλόγου, Ντίνα Χούσου, εξέφρασε την εμπιστοσύνη της για το μέλλον του συλλόγου. Αναφέρθηκε επίσης στις εκτεταμένες ανακαινίσεις και βελτιώσεις που έχουν πραγματοποιηθεί τον τελευταίο καιρό, υπογραμμίζοντας τη σημασία της συνεχούς ανάπτυξης.

Επιπλέον, η πρόεδρος τόνισε την κρίσιμη ανάγκη για συμμετοχή νέων μελών της λακωνικής κοινότητας της Αδελαΐδας και κάλεσε τους νέους να αγκαλιάσουν τον Σύλλογο.

Ο γραμματέας του Συλλόγου, Γιώργος Βλάχος, επισήμανε ότι ο μετασχηματισμός είναι μια συνεχιζόμενη διαδικασία και ότι υπάρχει ακόμη δουλειά στον ορίζοντα.

Ο ταμίας του Συλλόγου, Στέλιος Χαγιάς, παρουσίασε τον οικονομικό απολογισμό, ενώ ο πρόεδρος της ελεγκτικής επιτροπής, Κώστας Κατσάμπης, επιβεβαίωσε ότι οι λογαριασμοί αντικατοπτρίζουν σωστά την οικονομική κατάσταση του Συλλόγου.

Chronia polla! Stavroula Pandos turns 97 today

An adored Pan-Laconian Society living legend, our very own poet in residence, and a founding member; Stavroula Pandos is celebrating her birthday today.

Stavroula Pandos, nee Laganas, was named so because she was born on a most revered day, the Day of the Cross (Iméra tou Stavroú), on 14 September 1924. She grew up in her homevillage Kastania of Lakonia (present-day Kastoreio) on the foothills of the legendary Taygetos, twenty or so kilometers, or in those days four hours by mule, from our beloved Sparti.

She was the seventh and youngest child of subsistence farmers Giorgis and Giannoula Laganas. A gifted learner, against the odds for young girls of her generation during the great depression of the 1930s, she completed primary school up to grade six but to her lifelong regret circumstances did not allow her to continue her education further.

Her heart, however, swells with immense pride and happiness when recalling 25th March 1951. On that day, amid National Day celebrations in Kastania, she also got married and danced the Dance of Isaiah with the love of her life, village carpenter Evangelos Pandos. Thirty months later, the young couple by then parents of a 19-month baby daughter sailed to Australia under the government assisted passage program aboard the famed migrant ship Skaubryn. She remembers ever so well, as if it were yesterday, bidding farewell to family and friends in Kastania on October 26, 1953, the Feast Day of Agios Dimitrios.

Stavroula and Evangelos became the loving parents of three children: Charikleia (1952), Ioanna (1954), and Alekos (1955). The family is proud to be considered among the founding members in 1966 of the Pan-Laconian Society, in many ways its second home. Evangelos served on numerous committees including a stint as president of this organisation which he considered the representative body for all people of Lakonian background in South Australia.

Sadly Evangelos passed away, aged 91, thirteen years ago. Time does move on and today Stavroula at 97 is still going strong, continuing the family’s unwavering commitment to the club. She enjoys all Pan-Laconian functions, particularly when invited to recite one of her many epic poems that she has woven into words of inspiration and committed to memory. Most of all she says she enjoys her "wealth", the “human kind of wealth," she repeats with added emphasis and a twinkle in her eye: three children, eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and yes one great-great-grandchild!

Chronia polla Stavroula! Happy Birthday and many many happy returns. May you long grace our functions and stir our thinking with your embroidered words of wit, wisdom and inspiration!

Ευγνωμοσύνη και Αισιοδοξία για τον Παλλακωνικό Σύλλογο

Στην Ετήσια Γενική Συνέλευση που πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 15 Νοεμβρίου 2020, στο Παλλακωνικό Οικογενειακό Κέντρο, η επιτροπή ελέγχου και το διοικητικό συμβούλιο του Παλλακωνικού Συλλόγου της Νότιας Αυστραλίας είχαν κάθε λόγο να είναι ικανοποιημένοι καθώς έλαβαν σημαντικές ψήφους εμπιστοσύνης.

Στην αρχή της συνέλευσης, προτάθηκε από τον Χρήστο Δ. Βλάχο να συνεχίσει το υπάρχον συμβούλιο για άλλα δύο χρόνια, πρότσαη που γνώρισε θερμά χειροκροτήματα, και κατόπιν εγκρίθηκε.

Ο Πρόεδρος της Επιτροπής Ελέγχου, Κώστας Κατσάμπης, δήλωσε ότι, βάσει των ελέγχων που πραγματοποίησε, η οικονομική κατάσταση του Συλλόγου είναι ακριβής και σωστή.

 

Κατόπιν, η πρόεδρος του Συλλόγου, Ντίνα Χούσου, παρουσίασε την αναφορά της για την κατάσταση του Συλλόγου τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια. Παρά την πρόκληση που αντιμετώπισαν λόγω της πανδημίας, εξέφρασε την πεποίθηση ότι ο Σύλλογος θα σημειώσει πρόοδο και ανάκαμψη στο μέλλον.

Στο τέλος, αναγνώρισε την αφοσίωση των εθελοντών και του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου, που δούλεψαν ακούραστα για τον Σύλλογο. Τόνισε την σημασία της στήριξης των μελών και κάλεσε όλους να συμμετέχουν και να συνεισφέρουν στο μέλλον του Συλλόγου.

Τέλος, υπενθύμισε τις δυσκολίες που αντιμετώπισε κατά τη διάρκεια των σπουδών της και ευχαρίστησε το Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο για τη στήριξή του. Εξέφρασε αισιοδοξία για το μέλλον του Συλλόγου και κλείνοντας κάλεσε τα μέλη να ενθαρρύνουν τις νεότερες γενιές να συμμετέχουν και να στηρίξουν τον Σύλλογο.Ο Δημήτρης Κατσάμπης πραγματοποίησε ψηφοφορία ευχαριστιών προς το Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο για την εξασφάλιση χρηματοδότησης ανακαινίσεων στο Παλλακωνικό Οικογενειακό Κέντρο, η οποία επικυρώθηκε με χειροκροτήματα.

Αναφορά Προέδρου
Ολόκληρο το κείμενο της αναφοράς της προέδρου Ντίνας Χούσου είναι το ακόλουθο:

 

Φέτος, λόγου τον κορωνοϊού, ήταν μια πρωτόγνωρή χρονιά, όχι μόνο για το Σύλλογό μας, αλλά και για όλους μας. Αναγκαστήκαμε να αλλάξουμε τις συνήθειες μας, τα σχέδια μας και το τρόπο ζωής μας. Το ίδιο ισχύει και για το Σύλλογό μας.

Καταφέραμε μόνο 3 εκδηλώσεις φέτος μέχρι στιγμής και το τελευταίο με περιορισμένα άτομα. Αυτό όμως, θα είναι και η δικιά μας πραγματικότητα για το άμεσο μέλλον.

Ως συνέπεια, τα οικονομικά του Συλλόγου δεν είναι και τα καλύτερα για φέτος. Όμως, πιστεύω με τις ανακαινίσεις που έχουμε κάνει στο όμορφο χώρο μας, θα μπορούμε από το 2021 και μπρος να δούμε άνοδό στα έσοδα. Ήδη έχουμε εξασφαλίσει τακτικές κρατήσεις και συμφωνίες για ενοικίαση του χώρου και αυτό είναι χάρη στους όμορφους και καλούς χώρους που έχουμε δημιουργήσει, ξεκινώντας με την κουζίνα.

Με την ευκαιρία αυτή, θα ήθελα να σας υπενθυμίσω ότι και εσείς, ως μέλη, έχετε μεγαλύτερη ευθύνη από το συμβούλιο να βοηθήστε στο να φέρνετε κόσμο στο χώρο μας. Μην διστάζετε να επικοινωνήσετε μαζί μας να κλείσετε το χολ για τα γενέθλιά σας, βαφτίσεις και αρραβώνες των εγγονών σας, επετείους κ.τ.λ. Τιμή μας είναι να στηρίζουμε τις οικογένειές σας με μνημόσυνα, αλλά μην μας σκέφτεστε μόνο τότε. Ο Σύλλογός σας χρειάζεται τώρα... και στις χαρές και στις λύπες, και εμείς θα σας στηρίξουμε όπως μπορούμε.

Ας κλείσω με τα θετικά τις χρονιάς. Θα ήθελα να αναφερθώ ότι έχουμε μια υπέροχη ομάδα εθελοντών, η οποία στηρίζεται από ένα δυνατό και αφοσιωμένο διοικητικό συμβούλιο. Ο καθένας εκτελεί το ρόλου του τόσο καλά, με διάθεση, ενδιαφέρον και υπερηφάνεια. Ας αρχίσουμε με τις εργασίες στο χολ. Θα ήθελα να αναγνωρίσουμε τη μεγάλη δουλειά και συντονισμό του Γιώργου Βλάχου, Στέλιου Χαγιά, Χρήστου Δελακοβία, Παναγιώτη Δελακοβία, και Δημητρή Κατσάμπη. Δεν ήταν οι μόνοι, όμως, ήταν οι πιο τακτικοί που ερχόντουσαν κατά την διάρκεια της χρονιάς. Έχουν προσφέρει το χρόνο τους, τις γνώσεις τους και την τέχνη τους να πετύχουμε αυτό που βλέπετε σήμερα και χωρίς καμία αμοιβή. Σας ευχαριστώ πολύ – ένα χειροκρότημα!

Τώρα, για τις εκδηλώσεις μας – όλοι μας είμαστε τόσο πρόθυμοι να βοηθήσουμε και να κάνουμε ότι μπορούμε για να περάσετε εσείς, τα μέλη, και οι φίλοι σας όμορφα. Το φαγητό, απ΄ ό,τι ακούω από σας, είναι πάντα και υπέροχο και πλούσιο. Πολύ προετοιμασία με αγάπη και χαρά. Θα ήθελα να αναγνωρίσουμε τον Παναγιώτη Δελακοβία, Αργύρη Αντωνίου, Γιώργο Κρεμαστιώτη, Άννα Λάμπρου, Χρήστο Δελακοβία, Χρήστο Δ. Βλάχο, Αθηνά Θεωδορακάκου, Άννα Ζούνη, Ανθούλα Τσετσέρη, Ελένη Κουτσοβίτη, Κούλα Κατσάμπη, Νασούλα Βλάχου, και αρκετούς άλλους που είναι πάντα πρόθυμοι να βοηθήσουν – και πάλι ένα μεγάλο χειροκρότημα στην ομάδα αυτή!

Επίσης, θα ήθελα να αναγνωρίσουμε την τακτική και άριστη δουλειά, που χωρίς την δικιά τους προσφορά, οι εκδηλώσεις μας δεν θα καλούσουν ομαλά και τα νέα του συλλόγου μας δεν θα τα μαθαίναμε. Οπότε, ένα μεγάλο χειροκρότημα για το Χρηστό Δ. Βλάχο, τον Δημήτρη Κατσάμπη για το «Παλλακωνικό Δελτίο» και αναρτήσεις στο FB και την Ιωάννα Πάντου που μας ετοιμάζει τα εισιτήρια για κάθε εκδήλωση.

Γενικά, αν δεν σας ανέφερα για την προσφορά σας, κατ΄ αρχήν συγνώμη... η μνήμη μου δεν είναι και καλή τώρα στα γεράματα!

Δεν ξέρω αν όλοι σας το γνωρίζατε, όμως, τα τελευταία 4 χρόνια σπούδαζα φουλ ταϊμ στη Νομική Σχολή – ευτυχώς ολοκλήρωσα τις σπουδές μου και, πρώτα Ο Θεός, σε λίγες εβδομάδες θα γίνω δικηγόρος. Το Δ.Σ μου έχει δείξει πολύ κατανόηση και στήριξη και τους ευχαριστώ πάρα πολύ. Ένας ή μία πρόεδρος είναι όσο καλός/η όπως το Δ.Σ που τον ή την στηρίζει.

Κλείνοντας, θα ήθελα να τονίσω ότι είναι στο ΔΙΚΟ σας χέρι να έχει μέλλον ο Σύλλογός μας. Εσείς πρέπει να ενθαρρύνετε τα παιδιά και τα εγγόνια σας να προτιμάνε το χώρο μας και τις εκδηλώσεις μας. Ακόμα καλύτερα θα ήταν να τους προτείνετε να γίνουν μέλη του Συλλόγου μας – μάλιστα, μπορείτε και σήμερα να πάρετε μαζί σας αιτήσεις για να συμπληρώσουν και να μας τα φέρετε πίσω σε μας.

Σας ευχαριστώ πολύ για την στήριξή και εμπιστοσύνη που όλοι σας έχετε δείξει σε μένα και το Δ.Σ τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια. Ευχαριστώ για το δυνατό και προοδευτικό συμβούλιο που αγαπάει το Σύλλογό μας και θέλει πάντα να κάνει ό,τι μπορεί να πετύχουμε τους στόχους μας.

Καλή συνέχεια στο Σύλλογό μας και σας εύχομαι τα καλύτερα, με υγεία και αγάπη.

Kathy Rozaklis posthumously continues promoting the Greek language in Australia!

“She was a proud Spartan and the epitome of Hellenism”

In life, some seek to stamp their mark on the world, but not many manage to create a legacy of giving back to the community even after they are gone.

Born to resilient Greek migrant parents, Kathy Rozaklis, who lost a lengthy battle with cancer a year and a half ago, loved and embraced her Greek heritage so much that she found a way to encourage young Australians to learn Greek even after her passing by rewarding those committed to learning the language of her ancestors.

“The Kathy Rozaklis Prize in Modern Greek Language, donated by the Pan-Laconian Society of SA, is awarded to the student that receives the best overall grade in Modern Greek in three sequential semesters and is supported for five years,” explains Dimitra Rozaklis, Kathy’s cousin. She presented the prize to Steven Pavlovic, in memory of Kathy, and on behalf of the Pan-Laconian Society of South Australia during the Annual Aristotelian Celebration ceremony that was held last Friday at Flinders University in Adelaide.

Kathy’s own passion for learning Greek started back when she was five years old and her parents enrolled her in Greek school.

Demonstrating grit and perseverance, Kathy completed her studies in Law with Honours in Modern Greek following the completion of her education at Adelaide High School where she was a prefect.

Her commitment and work ethic saw her succeed professionally working for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the Legal Services Directorate at the Department for Education in Adelaide.

She was also elected President of the Pan-Laconian Society at the age of 23.

“She epitomised Hellenism,” says her cousin.

“She was the first Australian born, the first female and the youngest president of the Laconian community. Hard work, empathy and respect for others, became qualities synonymous with her name although her proudest role in life was being mummed to her two young girls, Paree and Frieda, to whom she passed on her passion for Hellenism.”

The mother fought courageously with dignity and strength but sadly lost her battle with cancer in July 2018 at the age of 43.

“Kathy has gone early but she left her mark throughout her journey in life. She was strong, passionate, articulate, yet always up to celebrating life. Her loyalty and commitment to her family and friends were of the utmost importance. So much so, her friendships transcend countries and time.
“From time to time, I invite you all to remember her as a successful professional, a devoted mother, a loving daughter, a loyal friend and as a woman who was proud not only to embrace Hellenism but to be an advocate and share her passion with others,” concludes Dimitra.

Pan-Laconian Society of South Australia "Leonidas": Annual General Meeting 2018

Members of the Pan-Laconian Society are invited to attend the annual general meeting of the Society on Sunday, 30 September 2018 at the Pan-Laconian Family Centre, 26 Aldridge Avenue Plympton Park at 12:30 p.m.

If a quorum of members is not present the meeting shall be postponed for thirty minutes, after which, in line with the constitution, the members present shall be deemed to constitute a quorum.

The meeting is of great importance because a new committee will be elected for the next two years. We look forward to the discussion about the present and the future of our club.

Ο διακεκριμένος Λάκωνας ακαδημαϊκός, καθηγητής Αντώνης Κοτσώνας από το Πανεπιστήμιο της Νέας Υόρκης ο οποίος ειδικεύεται στον υλικό πολιτισμό, την κοινωνικοπολιτισμική και οικονομική ιστορία της Πρώιμης Εποχής του Σιδήρου και της Αρχαϊκής περιόδου στην Ελλάδα και τη Μεσόγειο, βρίσκεται σήμερα σε μια περιοδεία διαλέξεων στην Αυστραλία.

Χριστουγεννιάτικο Πάρτι για τα παιδιά: Χο χο χο … Ο Αϊ-Βασίλης Έρχεται

Νωρίς έρχεται φέτος στο Παλλακωνικό Οικογενειακό Κέντρο ο Αϊ-Βασίλης με ένα τσουβάλι γιομάτο εκπλήξεις για τα παιδιά.

Την Κυριακή απόγευμα, 3 του Δεκέμβρη καταφτάνει να σκορπίσει δώρα και χαρά στα παιδιά και εγγόνια των μελών του Συλλόγου.

Κράτηση εκ των προτέρων είναι απαραίτητη. Για να έχει ο Αϊ-Βασίλης  έτοιμο ένα δώρο για το παιδί ή το εγγόνι σας, παρακαλούμε  τηλεφωνήστε και δώστε το όνομα και την ηλικία κάθε παιδιού που θα φέρετε μαζί σας.

Διαγωνισμός
Στο διαγωνισμό συμμετέχουν μόνο ερασιτέχνες οινοποιοί, μέλη και φίλοι του Παλλακωνικού Συλλόγου. Οι ενδιαφερόμενοι παρακαλούνται να φέρουν δύο μπουκάλια από το κρασί τους και να τα παραδώσουν στην πρόεδρο, κα Ντίνα Χούσου, μέχρι στις 7.30 μ.μ.

Αξιολόγηση
Τα κρασιά θα δοκιμαστούν από όλους τους παρευρισκόμενους που επιθυμούν. Αυτοί θα τα βαθμολογήσουν δίνοντας βαθμούς στα κατά τη γνώμη τους καλύτερα. Εκείνα που θα συγκεντρώσουν τις 3 υψηλότερες βαθμολογίες θα λάβουν τις παρακάτω διακρίσεις και πιστοποιητικά:
