The feats of Ian Thorpe and other Aussie Olympians in Athens inspired local septuagenarians and octogenarians, aided and abetted by members of the Greek community and neighbourhood kids, to scale their own heights at Ascot Park today.
When the Ascot Park Active Elders decided to hold their own Olympics the Laconian Family Centre, a Greek community group based at Plympton Park, joined forces with children from Ascot Park Primary School, who all learn Greek, to lend a helping hand. The kids will entertain the senior citizens by performing the zorba and kalamatiano dances while the Greek group will serve delicious honey puffs and cook souvlaki on the barbecue.
Secretary of the Laconian Centre, Dimitri Katsambis, said, “When we heard about the Senior Olympics in our neighbourhood we were ecstatic. We were only too willing to help. It is a wonderful way for us to share some of our cultural traditions and promote the Olympic ideals of friendship, mutual respect, participation and peace.”
